Answers to common questions about WHMIS training and certification.
WHMIS certification doesn’t technically expire in Canada as there is no prescribed renewal frequency in the regulations. That being said employers typically require refresher training every 1–3 years. A provincial health and safety inspector can require retraining on a more frequent basis as deemed necessary.
Renewal frequency is set by employers as part of their WHMIS Program which covers the training requirements. In some cases where employee are working in other locations the prime contractor or worksite safety manager can require annual WHMIS renewals.
Everyone in a workplace who is or may be exposed to hazardous products must receive WHMIS education and training. Education typically refers to the awareness level training, learning the terminology, understanding the pictograms and hazard classes, and how to read labels and Safety Data Sheets. This prepares them for the product specific training they will receive in the workplace on how to safely use, handle and store the hazardous products in their workplace.
